Slightly Obscure Games Pt.1

I figure I'll throw up a few more obscure titles out there like games that never made it to the states, rom hacks, Doom wads, RPG Maker games, Indie Games, Freeware Games, Zelda Classic Quests and whatever else I can come up with.

BS Zelda

BS Zelda was an episodic remake of the original Legend of Zelda released on the Satellaview attachment, with a few key differences aside from the 16-bit array of graphics. First off Link is replaced with the Satellaview mascot, a kid with a backwards ball cap. The game, being episodic was broken into four parts with a limited amount of live play. that meant that you only had a small window to play the game, and I believe they stopped supporting this game after about a months time. What good does that do you now? Simple, talented rom hackers have managed to patch the game together and translate it, making it playable.

I WILL NOT give you guys the link to the game itself, but if you're as morally corrupt as most of the Internet, here's the link to the patches.

BS Zelda no Densetsu

Atlantis No Nazo

Atlantis no Nazo(roughly translates to"The Mystery of Atlantis") is a difficult platformer for the famicom. You take the role of an explorer who has dwelve down into the depths of Atlantis (which oddly doesn't have much water to speak of) to find your mentor through a 100 area world. Now, while it is true that here are 100 zones to go through, the game is very non sequential; you could warp from the 1st zone to the 11th zone through just one easy to find doorway. There aren't any bosses really, but the stage design is deceptively difficult. The jump mechanic is more akin to Castlevania than to Mario, so you need to think ahead before you take any huge leaps. It's far from being a perfect game, but it's worth it to try and see how far you can get.

The Ultimate Torment & Torture

TUTNT is massive, full scale Doom II WAD that easily outclasses anything that's come out before. The game uses the typical "Doom Marine goes to Hell" storyline as the regular games, but really adds a whole lot to the experience. Rather than the episodes being based around several stages, you have massive environments to explore and battle the baddies in. There are minor puzzle solving sections, but overall, not really all that much. Most of the game has a real Quake vibe, but clever texturing really brings it into it's own. You also get three classes, three new weapons and more new monsters than you could shake your fist at. I'm having trouble writing at the moment, so rather than miserably fail to explain why it's so good, watch the videos and see for yourself. You'll need to use either the ZDoom or GZDoom ports to get it to work and you need to have a copy of the original Doom2.WAD, I highly suggest getting it off of steam.

ZDoom

GZDoom

Well, I know this was kind of a lazy way to fulfill my obligation to myself to keep this blog going. I just didn't have much to write about since I swore off talking about Final Fantasy for a while and I'm still in the process of writing the second piece in my Brief Look at Metroid series. I'll probably do another one of these before I have anything significant to write about.

Peace Out
